Is Madame Tussauds Sydney worth it with kids?

We have frequently visited SEA LIFE and WILD LIFE zoo, but never really felt the need to visit Madame Tussauds.

We decided to give it a go since we are Merlin Annual Passholders and boy we were pleasantly surprised!

Madame Tussauds Sydney promises encounters with super heroes, celebrities, interactive exhibits, and fun photo moments.

But is that enough to justify the ticket price for families? Check out our Madame Tussauds Sydney Review.

What Is Madame Tussauds Sydney?

Madame Tussauds Sydney is an interactive wax museum located in Darling Harbour, featuring lifelike figures of celebrities, athletes, movie characters, and Australian icons.

Unlike traditional museums, it’s designed to be hands-on and photo-friendly, meaning visitors are encouraged to pose, interact, and immerse themselves in themed environments.

Inside, you’ll find a wide range of sections including:

  • Famous celebrities and musicians
  • Sporting legends
  • Movie characters and film sets
  • Australian cultural icons
  • And a dedicated superhero zone

For families, it’s best thought of as a short, interactive indoor attraction rather than a traditional museum.

Madame Tussauds Sydney Tickets

As of April 2026, the cost of a general admission ticket to Madame Tussauds is $49 per adult and $36 per child over 2 years old. Talk about being expensive!

General Admission Ticket

Best for one-off visits. Price typically includes Digi Photo Pass with 8 digital photos included – valued at $26!

If you only have time for one attraction, then consider buying the general admission ticket online for $39 per adult or $26 per child (2 years and older).

Multi Attraction Pass

Below are the prices for a multi-attraction pass versus buying a single attraction ticket

  • 1 Attraction pass from $39 (Madame Tussauds only)
  • 2 Attraction pass from $49 (save 40% off)
  • 3 Attraction pass from $54 (save 55% off)
  • 4 Attraction pass from $59 (save 60% off)

Merlin Annual Pass

If you’re a local resident in Sydney and frequently visit darling harbour like us, then an annual pass is a must!

While it is much more expensive than a single general admission ticket for $39 per adult, it pays itself back in just 3 visits.

So if you intend to visit any of the merlin entertainment attractions in Sydney for more than 3x times per year, then it makes lot of sense to get the merlin annual pass.

Not only will you get access to all four main attractions in Sydney but also the SEA LIFE and Legoland Discover Centre in Melbourne as well as the SEA LIFE in Sunshine Coast in QLD and New Zealand as this is an ANZ pass.

What Madame Tussauds Sydney Is Really Like With Kids

Our First Impression

Before visiting Madame Tussauds Sydney, we honestly weren’t sure if it would be something our son Benji would enjoy.

From my own experience visiting as a kid, I remembered it mostly as wax figures of celebrities — cool, but not something young kids would enjoy and have fun with!

But what changed everything for us was realising that Benji loves superheroes — Batman, Spider-Man, Hulk — and knowing there was a dedicated superhero section inside.

That ended up being the best part for us.

What You Actually See Inside

Once we stepped inside, we quickly realised it was much more than just “looking at wax figures.”

The attraction is broken into themed sections, including:

  • Royal Family
  • Politicians
  • Australian TV and cultural icons
  • Music and pop stars (like Taylor Swift)
  • Sporting legends (like Lleyton Hewitt)
  • Movie characters and film sets
  • And of course — the superhero zone

There’s actually a huge variety, which keeps things interesting as you move through.

The Interactive Parts (What Kids Actually Enjoy)

What surprised us most was how interactive it felt.

In the sports section, Benji and I ended up spending quite a bit of time playing a virtual reality tennis game.

It was projected onto a screen, and instead of using a controller, you just used your arms to swing — kind of like the old Nintendo Wii.

We were laughing and having a blast trying to “serve” the ball and see how fast we could hit it.

That moment alone made the experience feel far more engaging than we expected.

The Highlight: Superhero Section

Then came the superhero section — which was easily the highlight for us.

There was an interactive setup where a camera tracks your movements and overlays effects like lightning or energy beams, so it feels like you have actual superpowers.

For a young kid, that’s pretty magical.

We also loved the Batman area, where there were smoke and steam effects that made it feel more immersive.

And one standout for me personally was the Avatar section — a massive figure that really pulls you into that cinematic world.

How Long You Need

From our experience, you can comfortably spend:

  • Around 1.5 hours
  • Up to 2 hours if you take your time with photos and interactive sections

We found that time passed quite quickly because there’s always something new to look at or interact with.

If your child enjoys taking photos or playing with the interactive setups, you could easily stretch it out a bit longer.

Age Suitability

From our experience, Madame Tussauds Sydney is best suited for:

Kids aged 4 and above

At this age:

  • They can engage with the interactive elements
  • They enjoy pretending and role-playing
  • They get excited by characters like superheroes

Pros and Cons

Pros

✔ Interactive experiences (sports games, superhero effects)

✔ Great photo opportunities throughout

✔ Indoor — perfect for hot or rainy days

✔ Short and manageable duration

✔ Wide variety of themes keeps things interesting

Cons

The main downside for us came down to crowd management.

When we first entered, it was quite busy, and some visitors were a bit pushy.

There were moments where:

  • We didn’t feel we had enough time to take photos
  • Benji was rushed while interacting with exhibits
  • Other visitors didn’t really wait their turn

That definitely took away from the experience slightly.

If Madame Tussauds could improve one thing, it would be: Managing crowd flow better so families can enjoy each section without feeling rushed.

Final verdict: Is Madame Tussauds Sydney worth it?

As a standalone attraction, it’s probably not the best value for money unless you bundle it with a multi-attraction pass or have a merlin annual pass.

However it can still be a great option for families if:

  • You’re visiting Sydney and want something fun and different to entertain the family
  • You’re already exploring Darling Harbour
  • Your kids enjoy interactive and imaginative experiences
  • It’s a rainy day and you’ve run out of ideas!

For us, it was a surprisingly enjoyable outing, especially seeing how much Benji engaged with the superhero and interactive sections.

As Merlin Annual Pass holders, we will definitely be visiting Madame Tassauds again this year.
